What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition that can affect all areas of the body. Its still not very well understood. The cause is unknown, and the condition itself presents with some unpredictable symptoms. The most common complaints are muscle and joint pains, and often people with Fibromyalgia has other co-existing musculoskeletal pains or injuries, like sciatica or disc injuries, bursitis, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, TMJ and jaw pain, and many other conditions.
Symptoms include widespread pain throughout the body which can affect muscles, joints and nerves; fatigue; brain fog and cognitive dysfunction; sensitivities to smells, chemicals, foods and other products; allergies and food intolerances; digestive complaints like Irritable Bowel Syndrome; and many more.
Because of the hugely variable nature of Fibromyalgia, I assess each person based on the areas that are affected for them. This can mean assessing different areas at each appointment if the symptoms move and change a lot. The Initial session generally includes a fairly lengthy health history, because a lot of people with Fibromyalgia have very widespread pain areas and complicated co-existing conditions.

What kinds of treatments help Fibromyalgia?
The techniques I've found that work the best for people with Fibromyalgia are really varied person to person, but generally the best responses to treatment come from gentle soft tissue treatment like Myofascial Release, Remedial Massage techniques, and cupping.
I like to use Magnesium cream for Fibromyalgia treatments because it helps to ease tight aching muscles, prevent cramps, and continues to work after the treatment has finished.
Other techniques that work well include dry needling, heat therapy, Muscle Energy Technique, etc..

Lets start with your Initial Consultation and Treatment.
A typical treatment plan for Fibromyalgia needs a few treatments close together, usually once a week for the first few weeks. Once we get a feel for how your body responds to the treatment, we start to space the treatments out further apart.
Ongoing treatment is usually needed, due to the long term chronic nature of Fibromyalgia.
Most people find that their "sweet spot" for reducing pain and flares is anywhere between a weekly treatment to once every 6-8 weeks.

"Mel is friendly and professional, you feel safe in her hands. I have a chronic pain condition and while massage is great for me, if it's not done the right way then it can hurt more than help. I was grateful that she was gentle but still effective in working on the right spots." Kaitlyn
"My shoulder is my worst spot. I love the cupping, it makes it feel so much better. I see Mel every 3 weeks and it keeps me feeling human!" Jenny
"I get a treatment every 6 weeks, mainly for my hips and back. I'm still working as a nurse, and I seem to be doing ok as long as I can keep moving. Getting a regular treatment has made a difference." Victoria
