Why Does My Neck and Shoulder Pain Keep Coming Back?

28/8/2026

Picture
You have treatment. Your neck finally moves more freely. Your shoulders drop away from your ears. You feel so much better.
Then a few days later, the familiar tension starts creeping back.

Does that mean the treatment didn't work?

Not necessarily.
If your neck and shoulder pain keeps returning, sometimes the more useful question isn't “Why didn't treatment fix it?”
It's:
“What does my body need to do every day, and does it currently have the capacity to keep doing it comfortably?”

Your body gets very good at doing what you repeatedly ask of it.
Think about an ordinary week.
Perhaps you spend eight hours working at a computer, followed by an hour driving home. Maybe you're a hairdresser working with your arms elevated, a tradie repeatedly lifting and carrying, a healthcare worker performing the same physical tasks throughout a long shift, or a parent carrying a small human around on one hip.
None of these activities are inherently “bad” for your body.

The problem can arise when the demands of your routine consistently exceed your body's current capacity to comfortably meet them.

And then we do something particularly human.
We finish a long day of sitting at work, drive home... and sit on the couch.
Our body has technically stopped working, but it hasn't necessarily been given much movement variety.

Movement matters more than perfect posture
We're not interested in frightening you about “bad posture.”
There isn't one perfect position you need to maintain throughout your working day.
Instead, we care much more about movement variability.
Bodies generally appreciate having options. Sitting upright, leaning back, standing, walking, reaching, stretching, changing position - they're all different ways of distributing demand.
If your work requires you to stay in one position for long periods, regular movement breaks can be useful.
And if you have a long commute after an already stationary day, even a short walk or some movement before settling in at home can give your body something different to do.

Your next position is often more important than finding the perfect one.

Sometimes the answer is getting stronger
Persistent neck and shoulder tension doesn't automatically mean those muscles need to be loosened.
Sometimes they're simply working very hard.
Strength and regular exercise can help build your body's capacity to tolerate the demands you repeatedly place upon it.
That doesn't mean you need to become a powerlifter or spend six days a week in the gym.
It might mean gradually strengthening your upper body. Improving general fitness. Walking regularly. Building endurance. Moving in ways you enjoy.
The goal isn't to create a body that never experiences discomfort.
It's to help your body become better equipped for the life you're asking it to live.

Stress, sleep and recovery belong in the conversation too
Neck and shoulder pain doesn't exist separately from the rest of you.
Stress can influence muscle activity and pain sensitivity. Poor sleep can affect recovery. Jaw clenching and headaches may overlap with neck symptoms. Long working hours can reduce the opportunities you have to move, exercise, eat properly or recover.
Even basic things like eating regularly and staying hydrated contribute to supporting a body that's being asked to perform all day.
This doesn't mean your pain is “caused by stress.”
It means that your whole week matters.

Treatment can help, but it can't do the whole job
Myotherapy and Osteopathy can be incredibly useful parts of managing neck and shoulder pain.
Hands-on treatment may help settle symptoms, improve comfort and movement, and give us an opportunity to assess what's contributing to your individual presentation.

But here's the bit we think is important:
We get about 50 minutes with your body. You get all the hours in between.

If treatment is the only strategy being used while the same physical demands continue unchanged, it's not particularly surprising when familiar symptoms begin creeping back.
That doesn't mean you've failed.
It doesn't necessarily mean your practitioner failed either.
And it certainly doesn't mean you need to spend your life coming in every time your shoulders reach your ears.
Sometimes we need to look beyond the treatment table.

Build a week your body can keep up with
Managing recurring neck and shoulder pain may involve a combination of hands-on treatment and changes outside the clinic.
That could include taking proper breaks at work, changing positions regularly, building strength and general fitness, getting enough sleep and recovery, managing stress, eating and hydrating well, and creating reasonable boundaries around working hours.
You don't have to overhaul your entire life overnight.
Small changes, repeated consistently, can build capacity over time.

And importantly, recurring symptoms don't automatically mean something is damaged or that all your previous progress has disappeared. Bodies respond to changes in load, recovery, stress and activity. Sometimes symptoms fluctuate.

At Simple Wellness, our Myotherapy and Osteopathy appointments aren't simply about finding the sore muscles and treating them.
We want to understand what your body is being asked to do outside the treatment room, too.
Because good treatment can give your body some support.
But what happens during the rest of your week helps that support go much further.

Simple Wellness offers Myotherapy and Osteopathy in Boronia, Victoria. If recurring neck and shoulder pain is getting frustrating, you can book with Mel or Sarah for an individual assessment.
